COMMUNICATIONS AND ENGAGEMENT MANAGER

About this role

Picture People is looking for a Communications and Engagement Manager who is passionate about promoting social and environmental justice and will work with us one day a week to help us increase our visibility both domestically and internationally as well as to consolidate, expand and seek new networks. We aim to recruit two interns who you will supervise to help us build and manage content and media partnerships to increase our audiences and create social impact.

Project Objectives

Your role is to raise awareness of the importance of our work, and generally support various projects in leading outreach initiatives. Lockdown has been a time of innovation and creativity for our team, which resulted in expanding our initiatives and networks developing online teaching programmes and added resources for knowledge sharing which we will continue.

 

Your aim will be to:

  • Build and deliver communication strategies and programmes across the entire spectrum of communication disciplines including media and internal communications, brand marketing, advertising, advocacy, digital and social media, and content materials.

  • Build Picture People’s outreach and engagement plans for social media, UK mainstream media and civil society.

  • Develop Picture People’s role as a lead educational organisation within the UK charitable landscape particularly targeted at disadvantaged youth communities across the UK.

  • Build and strengthen content collaborations and partnerships between Picture People and organisations and changemakers working in and beyond our key programme areas.

Your Skills

This is a strategic role but, as we are a small organisation, you will need to take a practical role in delivering as well as planning and designing communications strategy and audience outreach and engagement.

​

You need to demonstrate writing and editing skills, as well platform management and community collaboration skills.

​

You will be working remotely in an agile environment with an international team.

​

You will be able to advise Picture People, build and engage with new and existing partnerships and networks, as well as develop resources and systems to enhance the profile and visibility of Picture People’s work.

​

Key Responsibilities

​

Outreach Engagement and Impact

  • Build a communication policy, and execute targeted outreach and engagement plans to social media, mainstream media and civil society.

  • Lead outreach campaigns for Picture People’s projects by highlighting important work and facilitating the distribution and engagement of related media content.

  • Enhance the online presence of Picture People’s networks and platforms, ensuring they are active spaces for engagement.

  • Boost Picture People’s profile in UK media outlets and on social media.

  • Improve content promotion and co-creation by fostering relationships and developing partnerships with campaigners, video activists, journalists, technologists, non-profit organisations, and mainstream media outlets.

Editorial Support

  • Contribute to the editorial coordination of Picture People and its networks to effectively communicate and engage audiences with our work.

  • Supervise the intern’s digital comms output on Picture People’s platforms.

  • Counsel and support the design, copyrighting and production of marketing and educational materials including an annual review.

  • Counsel and support the development of the website including generating content, making improvements to functionality and layout, maximising its potential and monitoring its performance.

  • Update and improve Picture People’s contacts and relationships management database.

  • Ensure communication activities conform to branding and style guidelines, and quality standards.

  • Proofread written English materials prior to publication.

  • Document learnings from our communications efforts via short reports and blog posts.

 

Desired Skills / Qualifications

We are seeking candidates who align with our organisational goals of human rights, democracy, social and environmental justice, and have a background working with charitable/not for profit organisations.

​

  • At least 5 years’ experience of strategic planning in a journalism, marketing or communications role.

  • Excellent strategic thinking, with the ability to evaluate proposals based on strategic fit and identify opportunities for improving impact. 

  • An audience-centric approach with substantial experience of commissioning, interpreting and applying market research and audience insight.  

  • Expertise in building, fostering and maintaining relationships and creating networks.

  • Excellent marketing and outreach abilities.

  • Strong management, planning and leadership skills and experience.

  • Experience with working remotely with multicultural and decentralised teams.  

  • Experience of providing strategic communications advice, negotiating and influencing.  

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills including presenting, and public relations.

  • Commitment to Picture People’ purpose and values including equality and social inclusion.

  • Ability to take on a variety of deadline-driven tasks with limited supervision.

Remuneration

This is a 6-month position, working one day a week, with extensions based on the completion of successful performance reviews. We ask that you share your availability in advance with the CEO. The position starts as soon as a possible.

​

The daily rate will be £300 per day.
